Commercial Radio Takes The Lion’s Share
Commercial Radio has beaten BBC Radio on share of listening for the first time since 1999
October 24, 2019
Hats off to the team at Global Radio’s LBC – the station is the star of RAJAR this quarter, Q3 2019. In London the Nick Ferrari Breakfast Show is now the number one commercial breakfast show with a weekly reach of 813,000. It sits comfortably ahead of its stable mate Capital Radio, which lies in second place with a breakfast show reach of 708,000. We can’t underestimate what an achievement this is.
Nationally, the Nick Ferrari show reaches 1.5m adults a week an all time high for the show, and the station overall is up 23% YoY and now reaches a record 2,574m listeners per week.
It’s not only the breakfast show listeners can’t get enough of: the Eddie Mair show which broadcasts Monday to Friday 1600-1800 grew reach by 30% YoY and now reaches a record 856,000 listeners a week.
LBC is not the only news and current affairs station that’s seen record numbers. The News UK owned talkRADIO has recorded a record reach of 409,000 adults, up 56.7% YoY.
We believe these figures are driven by two key factors…
Firstly, we know from the Radiocentre Breaking News Report 2017 that Radio is the most trusted source for national news. Given the busy news agenda across the last 24mths it appears listeners are turning to these stations as sources of news and information.
Secondly, the investment in high quality programming combined with marketing and sheer hard work! As a comparison the two BBC stations in this market, 5Live and Radio 4, declined YoY by 1% and 3% respectively.
In the week that Radiocentre launched its latest marketing campaign ‘The Future of Advertising is Hear’ it’s worth noting that IPA research shows that this trust can be successfully transferred to brands that use radio.
Elsewhere… the share of digital platform listening stands at 56.8%, up 8.4% YoY, which represents 1.5% QoQ. The three leading digital only stations have had a good set of results. KISSSTORY, the largest, increased reach by 18.3% to 2,554m listeners. Absolute 80s is at a record high with 1,824m listeners (up 3.5%) and Heart80’s is up 23.2% with a weekly reach of 1,672m.
Commercial Radio overall was slightly down YOY by 0.3% and now reaches 35,930m adults a week…
That’s it from us for 2019. The next release will be for Q4 2019 on Thursday 6th February 2020…
